Thursday 5th July 2012 – walking ***** mainly cloudy with only a little rain :)

We had a lovely view over the water at Newgale this morning with no rain again :) There were several surfers out even one at 7.30! We drove along the coast to Solva and thought it looked a great place for a walk so parked for £1 and walked along the narrow inlet where boats are moored. First there was a small quay where kids were crabbing then the coast path went up onto the cliffs and around the corner. We spent a good ½ an hour watching the birds out on a small island quite close to the shore. Back to the van and carried on to the (smallest in Britain)City of St. David’s but apart from stopping at the shop and buying lots of goodies for lunch from their hot pastry bar we didn’t stop. Had a look at Whitesands but it was £4 in the car park so carried on to Abereiddy where Rob and Hannah had jumped off the cliffs into a blue lagoon. There was a free car park right on the beach in a lovely cove so a great place to stop for lunch. We then walked up the coast path to see if we could find the blue lagoon and it was actually not very far from the car park at all. There were two groups of kid’s coasteering and jumping into the lagoon while we watched. The younger group went round the rocks from the bay to the lagoon and by the time we got there were queuing up to jump in. One little girls who had waited until last really didn’t want to jump at all and her instructor and teacher were trying to coax her. She did it eventually and everyone watching clapped and cheered. We clambered up onto a cliff which wasn’t on the usual path which overlooked the lagoon from a headland. There was a small turret up there which was a good focal point and fulmers nesting :) When we were walking to it we saw the older group of coasters in the sea in a v shaped gap in the rocks where they laid on their backs until both sides of the v were filled with water and they were swept down off the ledge under a ton of water and then bobbed back up again – it looked horrendous but they were loving it!!! The instructor stayed in for ages and obviously loved his job :) We carried on walking along the cliff top, finding more and more reasons to go that bit further. There was quite a long beach only reached by a flight of steps and we noticed dolphins in the bay :) On the beach we sat on the rocks for a while and chatted to a man who was looking through his binoculars at what was obviously a bird of prey he said it was two peregrines – you could just see another one peeking round. He told us that further along there was a peregrine nest with a chick in it! We carried on, passing even closer to the two peregrines on the cliff top, and he pointed out where the nest was. We could just make it out but I worked out exactly where it was by counting fence posts and went and sat right on the edge of the cliff so that he could take excellent photos of the chick. Mum was nowhere to be seen. Mag did go and sit on the edge but it was too scary for her – especially after yesterday when she couldn’t stop herself sliding forward! Mag moved back a bit and still had an excellent view of the fluffy little thing :) The man had said there were also little owls in a quarry so we carried on to that but didn’t see any :( We actually walked as far as the entrance to the harbour at Porthgain so probably about 5 miles in total with all our detours around the cliff edge! We had another good look at the chick on the way back, still no mum but the baby was squawking and you could hear mum squawking back from further away. We moved away in case we were putting her off and wandered back. There was an old lady camping outside with her dog, we had met her on our walk and she told us she was going to sleep in the loo if it started to rain! We tried to keep out of her way as I think she will be our only company in the car park tonight! We ate more of the goodies we had bought in St. David’s for tea including a cream tea! Still no fish and chips but who cares :) Then a nice sunset over the bay – that’s unusual for Wales!!!
